And play music last night with dear collaborator Keir Nicholl for the first time in about nine months. Reunion! We had slowly and painstakingly been putting together a set of tunes when bam, this damn global pandemic hit. I feel bad for my professional musician friends; it was hard enough to make a living before Covid.<\/p>\n<p>We worked to resurrect his evocative urban ballad, <em>The Girl, The City<\/em> and <em>The Last Ping<\/em>, adapted from my poem below. We love folk music and pulled out our version of <em>Down in the Willow Garden\/Rose Connolly<\/em>. Rusty but happy! Perhaps we&#8217;ll be able to record and perform in the fall. It will be interesting to see the impact all this isolation has on venues and audiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE LAST PING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the girl is gone,<br \/>\nlong gone, out of character,<br \/>\nstatistical, presumed dead,<br \/>\nthe Verifying Department<br \/>\nhops to, sniffs out<br \/>\nthe revelers, especially<br \/>\nthe life of the party,<br \/>\nhis liquid engine of beer.<br \/>\nAnyone with information,<br \/>\nto confirm names and addresses,<br \/>\nsubstantiate stories?<br \/>\nThey watch your gestures.<br \/>\nRead your face.<\/p>\n<p>Last seen wearing a blue ski jacket,<br \/>\nwhite blouse, black jeans.<br \/>\nPhoenix tatto ascending<br \/>\nfrom the right hip.<br \/>\nBright, unintentional dropout,<br \/>\ninadvertently delinquent.<br \/>\nBoyfriend person of interest<br \/>\naccording to the RCMP.<br \/>\nAlways. Constable passes the flyer.<br \/>\nHer cell phone may be dead,<br \/>\nlast ping traced\u2014pinpointed in fact\u2014<br \/>\nto here. Right here. Last known location.<br \/>\nRight where we\u2019re standing.<br \/>\nThis town. Your pretty little town.<\/p>\n<p>Fuckin\u2019 A.<br \/>\nCheck your property,<br \/>\nyour shallow ditches.<br \/>\nSo petite, she takes up little space<br \/>\nin the psyche,<br \/>\nturkey vultures lead us<br \/>\nnot to her<br \/>\nbody but a deer carcass.<br \/>\nParents pray<br \/>\nto repair the squabbles. Home.<br \/>\nLocal kids clam up,<br \/>\nweighting the secret with smoke.<\/p>\n<p>A teenaged girl can forget<br \/>\nshe\u2019s graduated<br \/>\nthe fenced-in yards of childhood<br \/>\nto this vast plain<br \/>\nwhere condoms provide safety,<br \/>\nsympathy muttered.<br \/>\nShe forgot<br \/>\ntownies find transcendence in fury,<br \/>\none vaguely recalling<br \/>\nEminem shouts,<br \/>\na catfight in the backyard.<br \/>\nShe looked kinda posh,<br \/>\nsmashed-herd fumbling,<br \/>\nfawning, pushing.
