We two at my 50th birthday celebration on Molokai<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Cathy and I met when we were fifteen and sixteen years old. We clicked immediately and have been tight ever since. She is fierce, intelligent and a savvy businesswoman, always supportive of me, my penchant for poetry and various endeavours, including my son, her godson. She is precious to me and during this arduous Covid time we’re reminded never to take anyone for granted.<\/p>\n

MORE KIN THAN KIN<\/strong><\/p>\n

I often wonder about her,
\nmy soul sister,
\noften on the other side of the world,
\nher roiling mind, her great girlish heart.<\/p>\n

My sister in wildness,
\nhoots and laughter here in my ear
\nno matter how far she may roam.
\nHer mirth, her spirit, boost.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s ascended through more clouds
\nthan most mortals and certain avians,
\nroamed continents, I vicariously thrilled
\nor at times boarding the flights together.<\/p>\n

We are content in each other\u2019s company,
\nhowever distant,
\nwitness to each other\u2019s parade of lovers,
\ncavalcade of wrath and sorrow.<\/p>\n

She is with me
\nafter school, raiding the refrigerator,
\nfighting my little sisters
\nor her big brother for the stereo or TV.<\/p>\n

No matter how far she may roam
\nshe is with me,
\ncareening down misty country roads
\nat two in the morning,<\/p>\n

dodging skunks and lost heifers.
\nShe is with me drinking tequila
\nwhen no one else did,
\nbecause<\/em> no one else did.<\/p>\n

She is with me
\nat every wretched event
\nthat paltry town hosted.
\nShe is with me<\/p>\n

dropping acid in Hope, gathering shrooms,
\nslimy goop by the time we arrive at the bar.
\nShe is with me,
\nsneaking into the house past curfew,<\/p>\n

bribing the cocker spaniel with cocktail wieners.
\nShe is with me,
\nthumbs out,
\nriding endless summer BC highways.<\/p>\n

She is with me. I won\u2019t let her go.
\nMore kin than kin
\nwe feed off each other,
\neach return to each other a return home.<\/p>\n
