I didn&#8217;t grow up thinking, when I grow up I&#8217;m going to be a poet. But in essence, it is who I am. I wasn&#8217;t exposed to literature. My father read <em>Popular Mechanics<\/em> and my mother, <em>True Confessions<\/em>. Though, being an Irish queen of blarney, Corona could spin a mean yarn.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get a degree. I dropped out of university and ran away to join the punk rock circus; sang, wrote songs and poetry which I performed in coffee houses and nightclubs. When I returned to Canada, in a fluky way, published my first collection<em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sideways-Heather-Haley\/dp\/189563654X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1439911214&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Sideways-Heather+Haley\">Sideways<\/a>, <\/em>with Anvil Press. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Three-Blocks-Wonderland-Heather-Susan\/dp\/1897430477\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1439911256&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=Three+Blocks+West+of+Wonderland-Heather+Haley\">Three Blocks West of Wonderland<\/a><\/em> came out with Ekstasis Editions in 2009 so I&#8217;m not exactly prolific, though never cease writing. In a haphazard way, I&#8217;m becoming &#8220;widely anthologized;&#8221; <em>Verse Map of Vancouver <\/em>(Anvil),\u00a0 <em>Rocksalt: An Anthology of Contemporary BC Poetry <\/em>(Mother Tongue Publishing), <em>Alive at the Center <\/em>(Ooligan Press), <em>FORCE Field: 77 Women Poets of British Columbia <\/em>(Mother Tongue Publishing), <em>The Wild Weathers; a gathering of love poems <\/em>(Caitlin Press), <em>The SpokenWord WorkBook (<\/em>Banff Centre Press), <em>Where the Nights are Twice as Long: Love Letters of Canadian Poets<\/em> (Goose Lane Editions), <em>The Other 23 1\/2 Hours, What Your MFA Didn&#8217;t Teach You <\/em>(Wolsak &amp; Wynn), and the forthcoming Simon Fraser University&#8217;s <em>Lunch Poems<\/em> <em>Anthology. <\/em>Is my approach irresponsible or irreverent? Due to a bad attitude perhaps and <em>Sideways<\/em> might be entirely appropriate. <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve worked in many genres; journalism\/reviewer, non-fiction\/blog, prose\/<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Bj6kFc\">novel<\/a> and written several screenplays.\u00a0 I always go back to poetry. Or, come back to poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Recently I completed a rough draft of my latest manuscript, <em>Detective Work<\/em>. Why? It&#8217;s in me, verse. And I have no idea how it got there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MY WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fed a germ.<br \/>\nOld dog.<br \/>\nSpooned flies out of yogurt.<br \/>\nDislodged ants from the toaster.<br \/>\nEntered words.<br \/>\nFought for blackberries.<br \/>\nFree stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Doctored bites.<br \/>\nSigned language.<br \/>\nCollected greens,<br \/>\nHeritage tomatoes.<br \/>\nMeme parlanced.<br \/>\nRegistered my feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Last house on Husband Rd.<br \/>\nProlific bamboo d\u00e9cor.<br \/>\nYou can sit in a resin chair<br \/>\nForever, white ones<br \/>\nEspecially war strong.<br \/>\nToo late in the week now<br \/>\nTo do anything nice.<\/p>\n<p>Or, nicely.<br \/>\nToo late in our life spans<br \/>\nFor anything,<br \/>\nThough he\u2019s still trying<br \/>\nTo Xerox his ass,<br \/>\nMoon earth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Certainly I didn&#8217;t plan to become a poet.
