Five hundred<br \/>\nthread count sheets lulled her,<br \/>\ntriple-moisture night serum, pilewort slathered.<br \/>\nTwitchy sleep, the lie of white lace.<br \/>\nCentral nervous system, slipper socks seek the floor,<br \/>\ngrope for codeine, find scars, blue bruises,<br \/>\nsource blacked out. Yesterday\u2019s kayaking lesson?<\/p>\n<p>Low PH, high FSH. Every bleary morning<br \/>\ntea, tottering on the balcony, a smidgen<br \/>\nof remaining suppleness to torment. How tempting<!--more--><br \/>\nto toss off throbbing veins, lost arches,<br \/>\ndead cells. Still, she is grateful to see<br \/>\narbutus, ivy-swathed cedar above bifocal lines.<br \/>\nHypothalamus the true culprit<br \/>\naccording to renowned naturopath, Dr. Snyder.<\/p>\n<p>She ingests capsules devoutly; black cohosh,<br \/>\nred clover, wild yam, calcium-magnesium, ginkgo<br \/>\nbiloba. How could she have forgotten? No one is spared.<br \/>\nTide in, swim dock, cabin cruiser with purple blinds<br \/>\nswaying with speedboat wash. Colossal crabs<br \/>\nculled. Sun teases prone bathers. No suit<br \/>\nflattering enough. A long heron lights upon the pier,<br \/>\ndandy in his powder blue tux. Her depths are pure,<br \/>\nfree of lines, cracks. Small consolation<\/p>\n<p>she thinks, peering through water marbled<\/p>\n<p>with contrails of oar weed. It\u2019s early, before the heat<br \/>\nirons out shimmering. Soon everything will be flat,<br \/>\nas if scorched by a linen setting. Below, tidal currents<br \/>\nrip up a roiling stew. Wily seals, giant octopi,<br \/>\ncockles, wolf eels, gill sharks. Just try going out there<br \/>\nin that. He does, husband the quintessential man\u2019s man,<br \/>\npaddling to Skookumchuck. Dead reckoning<br \/>\nincludes smoke breaks at Piper, Sockeye Points.<\/p>\n<p>He gains good speed heading up the fjord past mule<br \/>\ndeer, bobbing skiffs of fishermen, probably out for Coho<br \/>\nthis time of year, and a yacht,<br \/>\nyellow goat of a dog on deck. Good time indeed,<br \/>\nstopping off to hoist pints at Millie\u2019s marina pub.<\/p>\n<p>A Harley blowtorches Highway 101 as she ups<br \/>\nthe telly\u2019s volume. Chunks of red double-decker.<br \/>\nWhite gauze masks a woman\u2019s scorched face.<br \/>\nEdgeware Road Station. ATTACKS ON LONDON.<br \/>\nTrains. Buses. Sightings. Suspicious packages<br \/>\nmushroom. Three detectives unload five shots<br \/>\ninto a chubby Brazilian electrician wearing the wrong coat<br \/>\nat the wrong time. Terrified tube drivers. It will be difficult<br \/>\nto convince her grandson the bogeyman is not real,<br \/>\nto explain that unlike Americans, we British suffered no loss<br \/>\nof innocence. She understands why the boy is a homebody,<br \/>\nwhy he didn\u2019t ask many questions that day, focused<br \/>\non Thomas the Tank, ignored cascading twin towers.<\/p>\n<p>Husband rushes back to Porpoise Bay, his freedom for her<br \/>\nsecurity. She is sick of herself. Her shrewdness. She is safe,<br \/>\nleaning over the railing, wondering why she is still<br \/>\nstanding and not at King\u2019s Cross as she was a year ago.<br \/>\nHe reassures her. You are a useful engine.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, let\u2019s to do it in a canoe he\u2019d joke.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t drag your kayak onto the rocks. Fibreglass hulls.<br \/>\nThey track well though. Let\u2019s put in right here. Get in.<br \/>\nOne leg at a time. Like pulling on a pair of trousers.<br \/>\nPlace like so. Sit on the edge,<br \/>\nweight on the paddle.<br \/>\nYou\u2019re not going to break it.<br \/>\nIs that a compliment?<br \/>\nThis is how you wield the paddle.<br \/>\nPut it in as if the water\u2019s hard on top.<br \/>\nFloat planes<br \/>\nwill make waves. Turn in.<\/p>\n<p><em>Do black bears eat off paper plates<br \/>\nlike Yogi and Boo Boo?<br \/>\nDo you have pepper spray?<br \/>\nAm I just hiding out here?<\/em><br \/>\nCome on. Pay attention.<br \/>\nApproach barriers with stealth.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t get wrapped.<br \/>\nPeel out of the eddies.<br \/>\nStay close to the shoreline for now.<br \/>\nWork together. Use our rhythm.<br \/>\n<em>Ooh, that\u2019s a good idea.<\/em><br \/>\nIf we tip, get out.<br \/>\nFind your partner. First thing.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t swim away.
