This poem was inspired by Susan Sontag\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/03\/susan-sontag-on-love\/\"><em>Illustrated Diary Excerpts<\/em>,<\/a> and this quote in particular: \u201cMad people who stand alone and burn. I\u2019m attracted to them because they give me permission to do the same.\u201d And this quote resonated as well: \u201cCan I love non-possessively, permissively, without withdrawing myself, setting up my own defenses and strategic retreats, on one hand, or reducing the amount and intensity of my love, on the other?\u201d I too aspire to love non-possessively but admit that the impulse, or instinct to both withhold and possess-protect myself-is nearly impossible to resist. I wind up feeling alienated, frustrated, confused. I must persist though, for it is likely the only humanistic love, love beyond community, perhaps even tribal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WARES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I need a good barrel. Or barrelful.<br \/>\nBeer, rain, oil, doesn\u2019t matter,<br \/>\nJust give it to me.<br \/>\nThen go<\/p>\n<p>Or come, oh nuisance caller,<br \/>\nNothing to sell, less to share.<br \/>\nWill we ever buy into each other?<br \/>\nSwitch crowns? Silence crickets,<\/p>\n<p>Respective niggles?<br \/>\n\u2018Tis folly, seeking sanctuary<br \/>\nBeneath a bat roosting tree.<br \/>\nTheir jaunty black sky scribbles<\/p>\n<p>Invade our periphery,<br \/>\nJolt our creaky alliance.<br \/>\nCold in front of the fire,<br \/>\nBurning side by side,<\/p>\n<p>Stones skip beyond us,<br \/>\nCinema of sunset so banal<br \/>\nIt provides no sidetrack.
